MOZAMBIQUE: AIDS spreads despite awareness campaigns

HIV/AIDS in Mozambique has spread rapidly despite awareness campaigns by both local and international agencies, a senior government health official has said.

Diogo Milagre, the deputy executive secretary of the National Campaign for the Struggle against AIDS (CNCS), said most messages were imported from the West and did not have an impact, given the difference in the cultural and social customs of Mozambique.

Milagre was quoted by Agence France-Presse (AFP) as saying: "HIV/AIDS has affected more and more people despite the campaigns, and this means that something could be wrong with the way in which messages are put out."

Recent official statistics show that Mozambique has about 700 new HIV infections each day.
