CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC: Construction of AIDS centres on the cards

Sixteen sites have been identified across the Central African Republic (CAR) for the construction of HIV/AIDS detection-prevention-treatment centres, a UN official has said.

In an interview with PlusNews, UNDP resident representative Stan Nkwain said the programme would be funded by the Global AIDS Fund.

"This is a legitimate ambition, given the extent to which HIV/AIDS is ravaging the population," Nkwain commented.

Government statistics indicate that the CAR has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in central Africa, with 14.8 percent of its 3.5 million inhabitants living with the disease.
