MALAWI: HIV/AIDS secrecy condemned

A Malawi government minister has publicly declared losing three children to HIV/AIDS, local newspaper The Nation reported on Tuesday.

Minister of Lands Thengo Maloya on Monday made the revelation at an HIV/AIDS seminar in the administrative capital, Lilongwe.

"I have lost three children to AIDS. To have lost them, to have buried them at such an early age is very painful," Maloya said.

Maloya said it was important to agree that AIDS is killing people and condemned the secrecy surrounding the disease and deaths from HIV/AIDS among his staff.

He also disclosed that his ministry had lost some 100 professionals due to HIV/AIDS-related illnesses in the last six years.
