MALAWI: Women empowered by workplace HIV/AIDS programme

Women within the ministry of labour were on Monday commended for taking a leading role in the fight against HIV/AIDS, local newspaper The Chronicle reported.

Labour commissioner Zebron Kambuto said an HIV/AIDS workplace programme initiated in September 1999 had resulted in some 82 percent of ministry women participating in voluntary counselling and testing (VCT).

"Women have proved to be responding positively to a number of preventative strategies that have for long been regarded as taboos, like condom use," Kambuto said.

Kambuto said the programme has enabled women to prove they were in the vanguard of arresting the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
