TANZANIA: Government welcomes US HIV/AIDS initiative

Tanzania's campaign against HIV/AIDS will receive the support of former US president Bill Clinton, the national commission for HIV/AIDS said on Thursday.

In a meeting on Wednesday between the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS) and representatives of the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative, ways of expanding the country's existing treatment and awareness programmes were discussed.

"The foundation will assist in the provision of a stringent HIV/AIDS care and treatment plan for all people living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania," TACAIDS policy planning director, Dr. Joseph Themba, told the UN news service Plusnews.

However, a UNAIDS official in Tanzania cautioned that negotiations were still at a tentative stage.

Themba said the Clinton foundation returns late in February 2003 to draw up the official plan for the new HIV/AIDS strategies.
