MALAWI: HIV/AIDS root of crisis – UN envoys

The HIV/AIDS pandemic is at the root of the humanitarian crisis in Malawi, senior UN officials said on Sunday.

"Along with erratic weather and chronic poverty, the HIV/AIDS pandemic is threatening the lives and livelihoods of millions of people," UN World Food Programme chief executive, James Morris said in a statement.

Meanwhile, UN special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, Stephen Lewis, highlighted the plight of women in the crisis.

"The majority of those living with HIV/AIDS are women, who are responsible for most of the food production," Lewis said.
