NIGERIA: More treatment centres, cheaper drugs

An additional 100 centres for the treatment and care of people living with HIV/AIDS (PWAs) will be opened this year by the federal government, the Guardian newspaper reported on Thursday.

The Nigerian Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS praised the move, adding the government has also negotiated with pharmaceutical companies for lower prices on antiretroviral (ARV) drugs.

"We welcome the interest of the government in the care and treatment of people living with HIV/AIDS," the network’s national coordinator, Pat Metemilola, told the UN news service Plusnews.

Metemilola said the annual cost of ARVs had dropped from US $2,000 to about US $399 per person.
