Portugal Sees High Pollen Levels in the Atmosphere, Low Readings in the Algarve and Islands

June 27, 2026

Most of the continental territory will have elevated pollen concentration values in the atmosphere next week, while the Algarve and the autonomous regions maintain low levels, according to forecasts published today in the Pollen Bulletin.

According to forecasts from the Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SPAIC), most of the continental territory will, between today and July 2, be at high risk of pollen concentration, especially from olive and chestnut trees and from the plantain herbs, nettle, sorrel, goosefoot, bredos, grasses and nettles (including Pellitory-of-the-Wall).

However, SPAIC warns that for today, “in some regions of the country, precipitation is forecast, and, due to the so-called ‘washing of the atmosphere’ effect, it is expected that pollen concentration will decrease with rain.”

After the rain stops, it adds, the pollen concentration is expected to rise again.

In this sense, the Allergology Society advises the population to pay attention to the weather forecast to complement the pollen forecast.

The forecast also indicates that, “in general, pollen from grasses and nettles (including Pellitory-of-the-Wall) stands out in the atmosphere, reaching high-risk values for patients allergic to these pollens in some regions of the country.”

The SPAI told the Lusa agency that, as happens every year, the publication of weekly bulletins through the media ended with the end of Spring, the season most relevant for allergic patients, adding that it keeps the pollen forecasts on the site (www.rpaerobiologia.com) throughout the year and that they are updated on Fridays.
