INATEL Porto Santo Hotel Awarded the ‘Night with Life’ Award – Silver Level

July 31, 2026

The INATEL Porto Santo Hotel was distinguished with the “Night with Life” Award – Silver Level, awarded by the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA), within the LIFE Natura@night and LIFE Freiras projects. The distinction recognizes the hotel’s commitment to implementing good lighting practices that contribute to reducing light pollution and to biodiversity conservation, as disclosed in a press release.

According to the same source, after previously reaching Bronze level, this new distinction highlights the ongoing evolution of the hotel’s measures, including the optimization of lighting management and the adoption of more efficient solutions, enabling light usage to be tailored to the needs of each space without compromising guest comfort and safety.

The reduction of light pollution plays a fundamental role in protecting several species, such as seabirds, bats and insects, whose activity can be significantly affected by artificial lighting. In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, this concern takes on particular relevance during the months of October and November, the period when juvenile cagarra leave their nests, with reinforced outdoor lighting management measures to minimize the impact on this species.

The “Night with Life” Award is awarded annually and comprises four levels of recognition — Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum — distinguishing establishments that implement concrete measures for a more efficient and sustainable use of lighting.

This distinction reinforces the sustainability strategy of the INATEL Foundation and the INATEL Porto Santo Hotel, based on the continuous improvement of their environmental and social practices, promoting more responsible tourism and contributing to the preservation of natural heritage.
