The Landscape Laboratory and the Operational Unit for Electronic Governance of the United Nations University (UNU-EGOV) will promote, in 2026, a new survey on the perceptions and environmental habits of Guimarães residents.
The initiative, which repeats every five years, is part of Guimarães 26 – European Green Capital and fits within the local sustainability strategy, aiming to strengthen knowledge about the behaviours, perceptions, and levels of environmental awareness of the municipality’s population.
According to the information released, the study will be conducted in person and online, with the support of the Parish Councils in its dissemination and proximity to the community, online.
The questionnaire includes topics such as waste, water and energy, transport and mobility, green and leisure spaces, water resources and environmental information, allowing the collection of a broad view of the population’s daily habits and how it relates to the main sustainability challenges.
In addition to aiming to update data collected in previous editions, the survey will also enable comparing the results with those obtained in earlier analysis moments, in 2015 and 2021, contributing to understanding the evolution of Guimarães residents’ environmental behaviours over the past decade.
That data comparison will be especially relevant in a symbolic year for the territory, marked by Guimarães’ emergence as a European reference in sustainability, participation, and climate action.
The researchers from the Landscape Laboratory say that community participation will be “fundamental to the success of this study, contributing to a more rigorous reading of local reality and to the definition of public policies better aligned with the territory’s needs.”
“By answering the survey, each citizen will also be actively participating in the construction of a more sustainable, conscious, and prepared municipality for the challenges of the future,” notes the entity.
