Funchal City Council Working Group Discussed Climate Change

June 16, 2026

The Funchal Local Council for Climate Action met today to discuss climate change, seek solutions, and strengthen partnerships, announced the municipality’s president, Jorge Carvalho.

The mayor indicated that the working group has as its objectives to discuss the topic of climate change in order to take “concrete measures, seek innovative solutions, and strengthen partnerships,” stressing that climate action intersects with other important areas and “is not a parallel agenda.”

Jorge Carvalho spoke at the meeting of the Local Council for Climate Action, which took place at the Funchal Cultural and Research Center.

In his remarks, the president of the Funchal City Council (PSD/CDS-PP) argued that the issue of climate change must be taken into account in other public policies, such as housing, mobility, territorial planning, and health.

This local council, which was established following the development of the Funchal 2030 Climate Action Plan, “aims to equip the municipality with a space where a set of entities, experts, can contribute so that the city’s action can be more coordinated, competent and capable in this area,” noted Jorge Carvalho.
