EDP has strengthened its renewable capacity in the Spanish electric system, with the two new photovoltaic plants in Navarra coming into operation, the energy company announced today.
“Both plants are the company’s first to enter into operation in Spain this year and represent EDP’s first renewable projects in the Navarra region, reinforcing its commitment to the development of clean energy in the neighboring country,” reads the information released.
According to the company, these projects will allow strengthening its bet on renewable energies, since each new megawatt (MW) contributes to reinforcing energy independence, reducing exposure to volatility in international markets, and accelerating an energy transition.
Together, the two plants reach 90 MW: Cierzo II (42 MW) and Cierzo IV (47.5 MW).
Among the two renewable energy projects, the company installed more than 160,000 solar modules, which will allow the annual generation of energy equivalent to the average electricity consumption of about 45,000 homes.
From an environmental standpoint, and considering a 30-year lifespan of the plants, these projects will avoid the emission of around 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, EDP said.
The construction of these solar parks generated more than 200 jobs in more than 60 companies, the company added.
