The National Association of Municipalities of Cape Verde (ANMCV) will create a network of cooperation among the country’s 22 municipalities to promote policies of sustainability, environmental conservation and protection of marine resources, announced today by the president of the association.
“The National Network of Blue Municipalities for the Ocean” will be a “platform for dialogue, coordination and cooperation that will bring together all municipalities committed to a common sustainability agenda,” said Fábio Vieira, in the city of Praia, at a meeting of the institution.
According to the official, this network aims to integrate public policies and environmental conservation initiatives, ocean protection, and the valorization of marine resources, promoting coordinated actions that strengthen the resilience of coastal communities and ensure truly sustainable development.
“The ocean is the country’s greatest strategic asset and should be placed at the center of territorial policies and local development,” he stated.
The president of ANMCV indicated that the association intends to continue institutional cooperation with the Government, with a view to strengthening local authorities and deepening decentralization in Cape Verde.
The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, who took on in 2023 the role of Patron of the Ocean Decade Alliance, has argued that Cape Verde must strengthen the sustainable governance of marine resources and the participation of communities in protecting coastal ecosystems.
On World Oceans Day, in June, José Maria Neves called for a “paradigm shift” in humanity’s relationship with the sea and argued that humanity must assume the role of “guardian” of marine ecosystems, reaffirming the country’s commitment to protecting the oceans.
