Older Kenyans, often neglected by HIV programmes that assume they are no longer sexually active and therefore not at risk, are slowly becoming more visible in the fight against the pandemic.

A new one-hour test for tuberculosis will only have an impact in the global fight against the disease if it is made affordable to poor countries, experts say.

Kenyan human rights activists have filed an appeal for the release of two men imprisoned for defaulting on their tuberculosis (TB) treatment, and are warning that the arrests could discourage other patients from seeking treatment.

SOUTH AFRICA: Early HIV treatment may be cheaper than thought

Research by South Africa's University of the Witwatersrand and Boston University in the US, has found that starting HIV-positive people on antiretrovirals (ARVs) earlier, and at a higher CD4 count (a measure of immune system strength), may be cheaper than previously thought.

UGANDA: US helps bridge gap in ARV supply

The US government has boosted its assistance to Uganda's AIDS programme with an emergency supply of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs worth more than US$5.5 million to begin to put an estimated 72,000 HIV-infected people on the treatment over the next two years.

1. Senior Technical Advisor for HIV Prevention, Management Sciences for Health - Swaziland

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the implementation of capacity building activities for nascent civil society organizations that implement HIV prevention activities in the region

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Sciences or related field, or a combination of relevant education and experience
  • At least five years of senior level experience managing/implementing an HIV/AIDS prevention programmes, preferably for US Agency for International Development, Centres for Disease Control and/or US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief-related projects
  • Significant knowledge and understanding of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS in a developing country, preferably Swaziland

2. Project Director, HIV Prevention, Family Health International (FHI) - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Responsibilities:

  • Lead implementation and monitoring of the designated project to achieve programmatic, financial, and administrative goals, and ensure project resources are utilized in accordance with applicable FHI and donor policies and procedures
  • Effectively manage staff working on the project to achieve set goals
  • Ensure production of timely and accurate programmatic and financial reports to FHI, and donors as required
  • Work with the Country Office Strategic Information team to manage the project level information system in order to respond fully to donor reporting requirements
  • Ensure programme quality according to FHI standards, including quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives
  • Provide technical assistance to the Country Office Management team through the writing and/or review of reports, protocols, papers, proposals, to ensure accuracy and appropriateness

Qualifications:

  • BS/BA in public health or related field, and 11-13 years relevant experience in international development programmes with five to seven years supervisory experience; or MS/MA/MPH in public health or related field, and nine to 11 years relevant experience in international development programmes, with five to seven years supervisory experience; or PhD, MD or equivalent degree with 7 - 9 years relevant experience in HIV/AIDS or family planning with international development programmes and five to seven years of supervisory experience
  • Overseas field experience required
  • Proven skills and demonstrated experience developing and managing behaviour change communication programmes, HIV prevention services, prevention structural approaches and biomedical interventions for prevention, including social marketing programs
  • A minimum of nine years relevant experience with health issues
  • Three to five years project leadership experience in a health management environment
  • Ability to travel within the country
