WHO issues guidelines on PrEP

NAIROBI, 19 July 2012 (PlusNews) - Many sub-Saharan African nations - traditionally the beneficiaries of international HIV funding - are gradually increasing their financial contributions to the fight against the virus, boosting the number of people on treatment to record highs according to a new UNAIDS report, Together We Will End AIDS, released on 18 July. full report

KAMPALA, 11 July 2012 (PlusNews) - Gay rights activists have opened Uganda's first clinic for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people in the capital, Kampala, where it will provide testing, counselling and treatment for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. full report

KAMPALA, 3 July 2012 (PlusNews) - Uganda's Health Ministry has begun rolling out its first treatment programme for multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and expects to treat some 250 confirmed cases of the disease. full report

UGANDA: Money for 100,000 new ARV patients in the budget

KAMPALA, 19 June 2012 (PlusNews) - Uganda's Ministry of Health will enrol 100,000 more people infected with HIV on life-prolonging antiretroviral treatment in the 2012/13 financial year, Minister of Finance Maria Kiwanuka announced in her budget speech on 14 June. full report

KAMPALA, 22 May 2012 (PlusNews) - The prevalence of drug-resistant HIV strains in Uganda has risen from 8.6 percent to 12 percent in the last five years, one of the highest rates in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to a recent study. full report

UGANDA: Combining safe riding on a motorcycle taxi with safe sex

KAMPALA, 3 May 2012 (PlusNews) - It's Saturday night and Jaffari Musoke*, who rides a 'boda boda' - motorcycle taxi - arrives at his regular stage, or departure point, near several hotels in Kampala, the Ugandan capital. He has an easy camaraderie with the sex workers who hang around the hotels, taking many of them home after a night's work. Sometimes he mixes business with pleasure. full report
