Despite progress, HIV efforts fall short

JOHANNESBURG, 20 November 2012 (PlusNews) - Record progress in reducing the number of new HIV infections and lowering the numbers of people dying from AIDS-related causes indicate that the end of AIDS is "entirely feasible". SWAZILAND: HIV stigma still a barrier

MBABANE, 12 November 2012 (PlusNews) - Stigma against HIV-positive people is hobbling national efforts to encourage testing, and to get more people to access antiretrovirals (ARVs), according to findings from a stigma index compiled by Swazis living with HIV. full report

SOUTHERN AFRICA: Governments failing to address cervical cancer

JOHANNESBURG, 31 October 2012 (PlusNews) - Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women in southern Africa, but new research reveals that governments’ attempts to address the disease have been inadequate. Access to cervical cancer screening services is minimal, few countries in the region have policies on the disease, and treatment remains a major challenge. full report

MBABANE, 26 April 2012 (PlusNews) - Hospitals are not protecting their workers from tuberculosis (TB) infection, say nurses in Swaziland, who recently staged a rare public demonstration to draw attention to how vulnerable they are to this highly infectious disease. full report
