BIYARWANGO's story

©  IRIN

Biyarwanga Tago is a 30-year-old ethnic Hema, who has been living in the Bunia Airport camp for over a month. He fled his village, Kasenyi, when it came under attack by ethnic Lendus. He managed to escape with his wife and three children. That day, his father and six brothers and sisters fled to Uganda, where they are living now. But by the time Tago reached the Ugandan border, Lendu militiamen had blocked it. Tago’s mother refused to leave her village and was killed.

Before being displaced, he owned a house and a shop in Kasenyi. “ I had a good life before. I had my own business, my own shop. Now, I have no work. I get up in the morning, and then I just sit around the whole day. I am looking for a job but haven’t found one.”

“ I live in a tent with my family and other people. At night, the tent is packed. We squeeze and try and make room for everyone. Sometimes, people in the camp sit all night because they have no room to sleep.”
