MARASHITO's story

©  IRIN

Marashito Akumu, a single mother with six children, arrived at the Bunia Airport camp for internally displaced persons three weeks ago. Her property was looted in a neighborhood in Bunia town. Penniless, she fled to the Bunia Airport camp with her children seeking safety.

Akumu is an ethnic Mululu. Tribes such as hers have also been sucked into the conflict that has mainly involved the Hema and the Lendu.

Akumu now sells maize flour at the local market to clothe and feed her six children. Though life is difficult in the camp, she describes her life as better than before.

“Now, I no longer fear. My life is better regarding my security and that of my children though life in the camps is very hard.”
