The Praia d’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort, located along the beaches of the Óbidos region, was awarded the HEART “We Care” Seal – Environmental Sustainability 2025, granted by the Portuguese Hotel Association (AHP) within the HEART – Hospitality, Environment And Responsible Tourism Program, as announced in a press release.

According to the same source, the distinction recognises the resort’s commitment to integrating sustainability principles into its operation and to adopting measures that contribute to more efficient use of resources and to reducing the environmental impact of its activity.

Among the initiatives developed by the Praia d’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort are the use of an electric fleet, photovoltaic panels, heat pump, wall-mounted amenities, reduction in the use of single-use plastics, removal of straws, sustainable purchasing, prohibition of protected species, reduction of food waste, good environmental practices of waste separation in the final stage of Green Key and BREEAM certifications, reflecting a continuous commitment to implementing environmental best practices across different areas of the operation.

“In a destination deeply linked to nature and the Silver Coast landscape, we believe that sustainability must be part of daily decisions. This distinction recognises the work carried out by our teams and reinforces Praia d’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort’s commitment to continue promoting an increasingly responsible operation aligned with current environmental challenges,” says António Esteves, general manager of Praia d’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort.

In 2025, the Portuguese Hospitality Association distinguished 165 hotel units through the HEART Seals, distributed across the categories “We Share” – Social Responsibility and “We Care” – Environmental Sustainability. Praia d’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort joins the group of 45 hotels recognised in the environmental strand.

Created in 2013, the HEART Programme promotes initiatives of social responsibility, environmental sustainability and the circular economy within the national hotel sector. Since its creation, it has involved 426 hotel units and 225 social institutions, enabling the reintroduction of more than 326 thousand goods and equipment into the social economy, an estimated saving of €7.6 million for social institutions and more than 894 million liters of water saved.
