An igloo-shaped scientific laboratory began floating in the Arctic on Wednesday and, by the end of 2027, will measure the effects of climate change on the icy ocean, announced the Tara Ocean Foundation, which promotes the expedition.
The scientific station “Tara Polar Station”, with 12 people aboard, departed on July 19 from the city of Lorient, in the French region of Brittany, crossed Russian waters and had its path opened by a Chinese oceanographic icebreaker, before becoming trapped in the ice.
Thirty research centers from 12 countries have joined this expedition, which will study biodiversity and the influence of climate change in an ocean that is warming three to four times faster than the rest of the planet.
