EPAL Reminds That Tap Water Is Safe and High-Quality, a Strong Ally Against Extreme Heat

July 1, 2026

In this heat wave, where thermometers in various geographic areas will exceed 40 degrees, EPAL, in a press release, draws attention to the need to redouble hydration care, fundamental to help our body regulate its temperature.

According to the same source, drinking tap water contributes to daily and sustainable hydration. The water supplied to the Lisbon region is strictly controlled, which guarantees its quality and safety for regular consumption, and it is also a readily accessible resource for everyone.

Thus, EPAL reminds:

  • Begin the day with a glass of water. After sleep, the body needs to replenish fluids, and drinking water upon waking helps to wake up and hydrate the body.
  • Drink water throughout the day, even when you are not thirsty, to replenish lost water. The ideal is to drink between 1.5 to 2 liters daily, but it depends on the individual, so adjust to your needs.
  • Always have a container of fresh water nearby. At home, place a carafe at the kitchen entrance and beside the television. At night, put it on the bedside table and remember to drink water before falling asleep and as soon as you wake up.
  • When you leave the house or go for a light stroll, always carry a container with water, so you are prepared.
  • If you prefer, prepare flavored waters, cold infusions, and opt for light meals and fresh ingredients in your cooking, such as cold soups. EPAL provides you with creative and refreshing options for the whole family that you can consult at https://www.epal.pt/EPAL/menu/%C3%A1gua/campanhas/receitas-com-%C3%A1gua-da-torneira/torne-a-sua-%C3%A1gua-da-torneira-ainda-mais-irresist%C3%ADvel).
  • Choose foods with higher water content. Fruits such as watermelon, strawberry and peach, and vegetables such as cucumber and tomato are good allies when the body needs to replenish fluids.
  • Children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses should be encouraged to drink water regularly. A good tip is to set an alarm on your wake-up clock or mobile phone to remind you to drink water.
  • In addition to hydration, other good options are to wear light clothing and avoid exertion during the hottest hours, and, if possible, to choose cooler and more ventilated places, at home or outdoors.

In Lisbon, pedestrians and tourists visiting the capital can also turn to public drinking fountains installed by the CML (Lisbon City Council) in partnership with EPAL and GEOTA, distributed across parks, gardens, pedestrian areas, municipal facilities and other areas of the city.

Also until September 4, EPAL makes available a refreshing outdoor space on one of the capital’s most iconic avenues: the Water Courtyard, located at Avenida da Liberdade 14, in Lisbon, which is the result of a partnership between EPAL, the Lisbon City Council (CML) and Lisboa E-NOVA.
