The Coimbra City Council is reported to have registered the first fine imposed and paid for illegal dumping of waste in public space, said today the councillor responsible for the environment of the municipality.
“To our knowledge, this is the first time a fine for illegal disposal of waste in a public space has been imposed and paid,” said Luís Filipe, who was speaking at today’s executive meeting.
The councillor responsible for the environment spoke of the first payment for a Coimbra City Council fine for illegal dumping of rubbish in public space, noting that the municipality had recently received the payment, voluntarily, from a resident who had been notified.
Luís Filipe said that the municipal teams have “issued a significant number of fines” and noted that the commitment to combat the dumping of bulky waste and other debris in public space has been “undeniable”.
Asked by the Lusa agency, an official source from the Coimbra City Council said that there are 40 fines, in the process of instruction or already notified, related to the dumping of waste in public space.
In August, the municipality had noted that it had identified 21 offenders for improper disposal of urban waste, including bulky items, following inspection operations.
The operations, at that time, were carried out in the parishes of Santo António dos Olivais, Eiras and São Paulo de Frades and Trouxemil and Torre de Vilela.
