Cimpor has launched the international brand Havelar by Cimpor, dedicated to 3D-printed construction solutions, to make this technology economically viable, scalable and less carbon-intensive, the company announced today.
In a statement, Cimpor explained that the new brand results from a strategic investment in Havelar and combines capabilities in the development of low-carbon cement and concrete with digital construction technologies and industrial-scale project execution.
The platform integrates materials development, laboratory and industrial validation, concrete production, design of construction systems, operation of 3D printers, logistics, on-site execution and quality control.
In Portugal, the Mariadeira residential development in Póvoa de Varzim is presented by the company as a demonstration of the industrial potential of this model, since the project includes 16 residential blocks and 32 housing units developed using 3D printing.
According to Cimpor, it was the first time in Portugal that a 3D-printed residential development used concrete supplied exclusively by concrete mixer trucks, integrating material production and printing technology into existing infrastructures.
One of the priority areas of the new brand is the development of 3D-printable concrete with ultra-low carbon emissions, using materials such as calcined clay, ground granulated blast furnace slag, advanced binders and recycled materials.
The strategy also includes the valorization of construction and demolition waste, through recovery and reuse of materials in new products, in a circular economy approach that the company calls “Urban Mining.”
Quoted in the release, Berkan Fidan, the global chief technology officer and a member of Cimpor’s executive board, stated that 3D construction could constitute an industrial platform to meet housing needs, resilient urban development, post-disaster reconstruction and decarbonization.
The company aims to broaden the application of this technology to different markets, including residential projects, social housing and supporting infrastructure.
In addition to Portugal, OYAK Çimento, the local Cimpor Global brand in Turkey, is developing in Hatay (a province in southern Turkey) a 3D-printed passive housing project.
In this context, Havelar by Cimpor’s international strategy also encompasses potential projects and market development in Africa, the Middle East, the Americas and other European markets.
