MALAWI: Clinics dispel male circumcision myths

Male circumcision (MC), which can reduce HIV among men by up to 60 percent, is controversial in Malawi and government has yet to implement mass male circumcision. But a chain of private clinics has rolled out the measure with some surprising results.

MALAWI: Lazzar Phiri,* "It's a thing that we needed to discuss."

Lazzar Phiri*, a health worker in Malawian capital, Lilongwe, doesn't only preach the benefits of male circumcision - he knows them first hand. Almost a year ago he went for the minor operation at a clinic run by the family planning organization, Banja La Mtsogolo (BLM) - Future Family in the Chichewa language. In a country where "the cut" remains controversial, Phiri sat down with IRIN/PlusNews to talk about it.

ZIMBABWE: Worrying rise in STIs among young people

A new report by Zimbabwe's National AIDS Council (NAC), showing a dramatic rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among people aged 15 to 24 in the capital, Harare, has health experts worried that the country's success in reducing HIV could be unravelling.

1. HIV/AIDS in the Workplace Research Symposium, University of the Witwatersrand, 9-11 November 2010 – Johannesburg, South Africa

This symposium provides a platform for sharing applied research on HIV and AIDS in the workplace in order to improve workplace practices and to strengthen the existing network of researchers in this field. This year’s meeting will focus on prevention, including possibilities tied to treatment as prevention as well as public-private partnerships. Abstracts are due by 28 April.

2. Providing HIV/TB Care At The Primary Health Care Level, Médecins Sans Frontières

The recently released report coauthored by the South African AIDS lobby group, the Treatment Action Campaign and government discusses the successful integration of HIV and TB services in the South African township of Khayelitsha. The integration of such services has led to a 40 percent increase in TB patients who are also receiving antiretrovirals in some clinics.

VACANCIES

1. Senior Policy Officer, International HIV/AIDS Alliance – Hove, England

Responsibilities:

  • Track, document and disseminate developments in HIV prevention policy, programming and research across the Alliance
  • In collaboration with other Alliance staff, develop a research agenda
  • Plan and manage specific policy and advocacy projects as allocated by the head of team
  • Initiate policy analysis to enable the Alliance to form informed and effective policy, both programmatic and institutional
  • Write or manage the production of high quality policy reports and papers accurately representing Alliance policy positions
  • Represent the Alliance in a variety of external relationships, in particular with global networks of men who have sex with men, sex workers, injecting drug users and people living with HIV/AIDS
  • Undertake other duties, including the provision of general HIV prevention-related policy advice, as required

Qualifications:

  • Relevant post-graduate qualification or equivalent experience in a related field such as development, political science or international policy
  • Knowledge of international agencies, nongovernmental organizations and donors
  • Substantial experience working with key populations and vulnerable groups
  • Experience in the development and influence of policy, preferably related to the engagement of civil society in policy-making
  • In-depth knowledge of global AIDS policy trends and dynamics, particularly in relation to HIV prevention and programming
  • Excellent communication skills and fluent English; ability to work in Spanish an added advantage

2. Policy Manager, International HIV/ AIDS Alliance – Hove, England

Responsibilities:

  • Provide senior-level strategic guidance on key thematic policy areas, playing a key role in the inclusion policy trends and issues within the development of the Alliance’s overall strategic direction
  • Contribute to overall resource mobilisation for policy work within the Alliance and, as assigned, lead the development of specific proposals
  • Plan and manage policy and advocacy projects
  • Manage the documentation of case studies of Alliance-supported activities as well as the production of reports
  • Contribute relevant policy updates to Alliance-wide communications initiatives
  • Act as a senior representative of the Alliance in a variety of high-level external forums and relationships
  • Support the Alliance’s media work, for example by acting as a spokesperson and briefing journalists
  • Undertake other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Relevant post-graduate qualification or equivalent experience in a related field such as development, political science or international policy with a proven track record in management
  • Knowledge of international agencies, nongovernmental organizations and donors
  • Substantial experience working with key populations and vulnerable groups
  • Experience in the development and influence of policy, preferably related to the engagement of civil society in policy-making
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and build partnerships and consensus,within teams and with other stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and conflicting priorities
  • In-depth knowledge of global AIDS policy trends and dynamics,particularly in relation to HIV prevention and programming
  • Excellent communication skills and fluent English; ability to work in Spanish an added advantage
