ZIMBABWE: Global Fund moves to safeguard money

Government officials in Zimbabwe are unhappy about a decision by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to ditch the National AIDS Council (NAC) as the principal recipient of its existing and future grants and to instead channel funds through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

1. International Forum on Sexual Violence

The Sexual Violence Research Initiative Forum, will be held from 6-9 July 2009in Johannesburg, South Africa and is hosted by the SA Medical Research Council. The event aims to promote research on sexual violence, highlighting innovation and encouraging sharing and networking in the area of sexual violence. This global meeting will bring together over 200 participants working on sexual violence as researchers, gender activists, funders, policy makers, service providers, survivors and others. The conference is being organised by the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI).

2. Rational Management of Medicines - a focus on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, 1-13 November 2009, Ifakara, Tanzania

This two week course, run by the Swiss Tropical Institute, aims to enable health professionals to understand and apply the concepts and principles of essential medicines and rational medicine management with a focus on the diseases of poverty HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis The application deadline is 31 August 2009.

VACANCIES:


1. National PMTCT and Paediatric HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Coordinator, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation - Harare, Zimbabwe

Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate and provide technical leadership to the expansion of the national PMTCT and paediatric HIV/AIDS care and treatment programme.
  • Supervise and manage the national PMTCT and paediatric HIV/AIDS care and treatment team within the AIDS & TB unit of the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare (MoHCW) Zimbabwe.
  • Work closely with the national AIDS and TB unit as well as other MOHCW departments to exercise appropriate integration and scale up of PMTCT and paediatric HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services with other services at all levels.
  • Work closely and give guidance to the national, provincial and district health teams in the harmonisation of PMTCT and paediatric HIV/AIDS care and treatment approaches that are integrated into overall national maternal and child health strategies.
  • Facilitate the collaboration and networking of national, regional and international organisations involved in PMTCT and paediatric HIV/AIDS care and treatment services to ensure that all programme activities are in line with national policies, strategies, plans and guidelines.
Requirements:
  • MBChB (MD equivalent) or MPH or equivalent required
  • At least five years experience in the area of HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe and the region
  • Extensive knowledge on Paediatric HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment and MMed Pediatrics a plus
  • Excellent knowledge of the Zimbabwe health system and structures
  • Committed to working in Zimbabwe and the region
  • Excellent planning, organising and report writing skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate with different stakeholders at all levels
  • Team leadership and good interpersonal skills
  • Computer literate
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Initiative, tactful and diplomatic
