How to prepare a garden for a hotter and drier climate? Which crops will be better adapted? And in what way can urban gardens contribute to more resilient territories? These are among the questions to be debated at the seminar “My Garden in Tomorrow’s Climate,” promoted by LIPOR, on September 25, at Casa do Corim – The Place of Sustainability, from 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., according to a press release.
According to the same source, climate change poses new challenges to urban agriculture, requiring adaptation of cultivation practices, of the species used, and of resource management itself. It is in this context that LIPOR promotes a moment of reflection and knowledge sharing, directed to urban gardeners, whether or not they participate in the Horta à Porta project, and to municipal technicians.
With consolidated experience in promoting urban gardens, notably through Horta à Porta, LIPOR recognizes in these spaces an important contribution to the sustainability of territories and communities. More than places for food production, gardens can be spaces for promoting biodiversity, soil protection and regeneration, responsible water use, valorization of natural resources, composting and, above all, for community involvement and learning.
Throughout the morning, the seminar will address different dimensions of the adaptation of urban gardens to climate change. The program begins with the session “Healthy Soil, Happy Garden,” with Pedro Nogueira, from CIBIO, followed by a reflection on varieties and crops more resistant to drought and heat, led by Rosa Moreira, Agricultural Scientist.
Experience sharing will also have a prominent place, with the session “Neighbors Who Inspire – The Example of Famalicão’s Gardens,” which will feature Verónica Sousa, from the Municipal Chamber of Famalicão, and a guest gardener from the Horta of the Municipality of Famalicão.
The gathering ends with the round table “Roots in Conversation,” which will bring together the different participants for a discussion about the challenges and opportunities facing urban gardens in a context of climate change. The session will be moderated by Cristina Ferreira, from LIPOR.
With this initiative, LIPOR aims to bring technical knowledge closer to the experience of those who cultivate, creating space for the sharing of concrete solutions and for the collective building of responses to the challenges of climate change.
