Government Increases Biodiesel Limit in Diesel to 10%

July 11, 2026

The Government has approved a decree-law that increases the maximum biodiesel incorporation limit in diesel from 7% to 10%, while keeping available a fuel compatible with older vehicles.

The decree, approved by the Council of Ministers on Thursday, partially transposes the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and updates the rules governing fuel quality and the blending of biofuels.

According to a press release, the maximum biodiesel incorporation limit in diesel rises from 7% to 10%, “in line with the new European rules”.

The Government, however, assures that diesel with a maximum biodiesel content of 7% will continue to be available, to ensure compatibility with older vehicles.

“The measure further simplifies the regime applicable to gasoline, updates the technical specifications of fuels and eliminates rules that have since been repealed by European legislation, strengthening the alignment of the national legal framework with the objectives of the energy transition and the decarbonization of transport,” the same press release explains.
