Southern Mozambique Under Yellow Heat Warning

October 14, 2026

The Mozambican National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) issued today a yellow alert for the three southern provinces of the country, due to forecasts of intense heat, with temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius starting Thursday.

According to the alert, the phenomenon is expected to persist until Sunday, October 18, covering several districts in the Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane provinces.

In Maputo Province, the alert mainly covers the districts of Boane, Namaacha, Moamba, Magude, Manhiça, Marracuene and Matutuíne.

In Gaza, it includes, among others, the districts of Chibuto, Guijá, Mapai, Chicualacuala, Mandlakazi, Chókwè and Massingir, as well as the city of Xai-Xai.

In Inhambane, the alert mainly covers the districts of Zavala, Mabote, Funhalouro, Panda and Inharrime.

INAM attributes the forecast to the persistence of hot and humid air masses and indicates that elevated temperatures are also expected to affect the central region of the country, especially the districts situated along the Zambezi valley.

The institute recommends adopting precautionary and safety measures in response to the heatwave and foresees updating the alert on Thursday, at 10:00 local time (09:00 in Lisbon).
