The Pampilhosa da Serra Town Hall distributed around 8.5 tonnes of bee food to nearly a hundred beekeepers in the municipality, the Coimbra district council announced today.
In a statement sent to the Lusa agency, the municipality said that two kilograms of food were delivered per hive, covering 97 local beekeepers and approximately 4,200 hives.
“In a context where beekeeping faces increasingly demanding challenges, notably the scarcity of natural resources, the impacts of climate change and the threat of pests such as the Asian hornet, the municipality intends to actively contribute to the sustainability of this activity,” said the Pampilhosa da Serra City Council.
Beyond direct support to producers, this action forms part of a broader municipal strategy to value and raise awareness of the importance of beekeeping, recognizing the essential role of bees in environmental preservation and in agricultural production.
The council also recalled that, in 2025, about 150 Asian hornet nests were neutralized and around 1,000 traps installed in several villages and strategic points of the municipality.
“Overall, the distribution of food to the hives and the measures to control the Asian hornet represented, over the past 12 months, a municipal investment of around 20,000 euros,” the council stated.
