Mota-Engil Ambiente e Energia secured an investment of 25 million euros intended for the construction of five renewable biomethane production units, a pioneering project that will enable the first large-scale injection of biomethane into the National Gas Grid and bolster the country’s energy transition, the company announced.
According to the same source, the operation benefited from the support of Crédito Agrícola, as the financial partner of this strategic investment, reinforcing Mota-Engil Ambiente e Energia’s commitment to developing sustainable solutions for waste valorization and renewable energy production.
The new units will be installed in Coimbra and Aveiro (ERSUC), Leiria (Valorlis), Seixal (Amarsul) and Amadora (Valorsul), coming into operation by the end of 2026. Collectively, they will have the capacity to produce up to 170 GWh of biomethane per year, through the valorization of around 600 thousand tonnes of biodegradable urban waste annually.
The project will allow the transformation of approximately 20.3 million cubic meters of biogas per year into biomethane suitable for injection into the National Gas Grid, contributing to the gradual replacement of fossil fuels with renewable gases and to strengthening the national energy autonomy.
The initiative, supported by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), is expected to avoid the emission of around 50 thousand tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year, through the valorization of methane from the organic fraction of urban waste and the reduction in the use of fossil-origin natural gas.
For Mota-Engil Ambiente e Energia, this investment represents another step in realizing its strategy of leadership in the circular economy and renewable energy production, transforming waste into resources and creating environmental and energy value for the territories where it operates.

At the same time, Mota-Engil Ambiente e Energia is developing a second wave of five biomethane production projects for the period 2027-2030, with the aim of reaching a production capacity close to 500 GWh per year, consolidating its position as one of the leading operators of renewable gases in Portugal.
