The offer of environmental awareness activities for the 2026/2027 academic year will consist of 70 initiatives aimed at the different levels of schooling and available on all the islands, announced today by the Government of the Azores.
The regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Action, Alonso Miguel, stated, during a presentation at Francisco Ferreira Drummond Integrated Basic School, on the island of Terceira, that this initiative “translates the commitment of the Regional Government to environmental education and to the formation of more aware, informed and prepared citizens for the challenges of the present and the future”.
Alonso Miguel noted, cited in a press release, that the offer covers several areas of intervention, including nature conservation, natural heritage, biodiversity, geodiversity, climate change, water resources, waste management, the circular economy and energy efficiency, highlighting the unique characteristics of the Azorean insular territory.
The 70 activities planned for 2026/2027 include interpretive trails and field activities, visits and educational sessions at environmental centers, pedagogical games, exhibitions and playful-educational sessions, allowing teachers to select the proposals most appropriate to the students’ ages, the curricular contents and the pedagogical objectives.
For the new school year, activities at some environmental centers were renewed, pedagogical contents updated and new actions dedicated to sustainability, energy efficiency and marine litter were introduced.
Educational resources were also strengthened, through the acquisition of the pedagogical game “Discovering the Environment” and didactic models of volcanoes.
Activities associated with LIFE projects, island natural parks, the Azores Geopark and biosphere reserves remain, as well as initiatives to promote sustainability and the circular economy.
According to the Azorean executive, since April 2022, around 3,300 environmental awareness activities have been carried out, involving more than 75,000 students from schools on the nine islands.
In the 2025/2026 academic year, around 660 actions were promoted, with the participation of nearly 14,000 students.
For Alonso Miguel, these figures “reflect the commitment of teachers to enrich their pedagogical practices, the work of our technicians in the transmission of knowledge and, above all, the participation of children and young people who discover new ways to understand and value the environment”.
The head of the Environment department intends that schools “have more tools to address climate change, mobilize their students and develop projects capable of producing concrete results in their respective communities”.
“By strengthening teachers’ training, we are also valuing their capacity to intervene and creating better conditions for informed and responsible participation by the students,” said Alonso Miguel.
