March 16, 2026

Águas de Gaia today launched a public tender worth 949 thousand euros to acquire 1,720 brown containers with a capacity of 360 liters for organic waste; it was today published in the Official Journal (DR).

According to the terms of reference for the procedure issued by Vila Nova de Gaia’s municipal company (Porto district), consulted by Lusa, “the supply of 1,720 bin shelters for 360-liter containers” and “1,720 360-liter containers”.

These are brown bin shelters for “organic waste”, as identified in the tender specifications, which must be brown and “must have a service door that allows the removal of the containers for collection, with a triangular-key lock”, “to incorporate a pedal-operated opening system, with the most appropriate treatments, to ensure the best possible protection against corrosion and deterioration” and “to allow fixation to the ground”.

According to the publication in DR, the contract has a duration of 120 days, and in the terms of reference it is established that, after award, “the deliveries will be phased upon request by Águas de Gaia”, with “500 shelters and containers in the first 30 days”, “500 shelters and containers in the following 30 days” and “720 shelters and containers in the last 60 days of the contract’s execution”.

Bidders may submit proposals to supply the containers and shelters by April 12, according to the procedure.

In August 2024, the former executive of the Gaia City Council, led by Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues (PS), launched a pilot project for the collection of biowaste in the Historic Centre, in Afurada and in the municipal canteens, aiming to collect more than 1,000 tonnes of biowaste by the end of that year and about 43,000 tonnes by 2030.

Organic or biowaste includes leftovers from meals, vegetables and fruits, bread, cakes, eggshells, coffee, tea bags and even paper napkins.

The General Regime for Waste Management determined that the operationalization of the selective collection of biowaste should be implemented by 31 December 2023.
