UGANDA: US cash for AIDS and terminal illnesses

JOHANNESBURG, 13 Oct 2005 (PLUSNEWS) - The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has pledged $3 million towards a three-year programme to assist Ugandans with terminal illnesses.

Associated Press quoted the USAIDS country director, Margot Ellis, as saying, "By 2008 the programme will help up to 350,000 people get care, either at Uganda's Hospice-Africa or through organisations trained by Hospice Africa to provide such care."

According to Ellis, Hospice-Africa currently cared for about 10,000 AIDS patients.

Uganda's AIDS Commission estimates that between 400,000 and 500,000 people are in the advanced stages of HIV/AIDS infection.
