NIGERIA: Government to scale up HIV/AIDS treatment as funding increases

JOHANNESBURG, 20 Sep 2005 (PLUSNEWS) - Nigeria has promised to open 100 new treatment centres, drastically increasing access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the rising number of people living with HIV/AIDS.

Minister of Health Professor Eyitayo Lambo told a meeting of the National Council of Health, which formulates health policy, that financial resources would be made available through the Global Fund, the World Health Organisation, the World Bank and PEPFAR, a US government AIDS fund.

The local Vanguard newspaper reported that the government aimed to provide ART to 250,000 of the approximately 3.5 million Nigerians living with HIV/AIDS by June 2006.
