TANZANIA: Swedes boost AIDS treatment plan

JOHANNESBURG, 21 Feb 2005 (PLUSNEWS) - Tanzania's plan to have 400,000 HIV-positive people on treatment by 2008 has received a US $22 million shot in the arm from Sweden.

Announcing the new funds at the weekend, permanent secretary for the Ministry of Health Gray Mgonja told Agence France-Presse the grant was "timely", since his government had only recently implemented its HIV/AIDS treatment plan.

According to Mgonja, a $2 million order for antiretroviral drugs had already been placed, while another order worth $3.5 million was being finalised by government.

It is estimated that only 3,000 of the country's two million HIV-positive people currently have access to the life-prolonging drugs.
