TANZANIA: Cash released for free anti-AIDS treatment

JOHANNESBURG, 26 Aug 2004 (PLUSNEWS) - People living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania will soon have access to free antiretroviral drugs under the government's four-year treatment programme.

More than US $1.8 million was recently released by the Treasury Department for the Ministry of Health to purchase anti-AIDS drugs, a local newspaper, The Guardian, reported.

The treatment programme was originally scheduled to begin in March but has been deferred until October because of delays in the release of funds from potential donors and international organisations.

Some 30,000 of Tanzania's estimated 2.2 million HIV-positive people are expected to access treatment by 2005.
