SOMALIA: USAID complex emergency/drought report for September
NAIROBI, 15 September (IRIN) - USAID's 11 September complex/drought emergency report, examines the complex emergency this Horn of Africa nation has been facing consecutively for the past nine years. Since the fall of Siyad Barreh's dictatorship in 1991, Somalia has lacked a functioning and internationally recognised national government.
Kidnappings, looting, killing and continual inter-clan warfare, as well as abnormally low rainfall for the past three years, has made Somalia's position in terms of humanitarian aid, a difficult one. According to the UN Coordination Unit, 750,000 people are still vulnerable as a result of the drought in Somalia, in addition to 450,000 who have been displaced by war.
This amounts to 1,200,000 vulnerable people in need of food assistance and other humanitarian relief. This month's report examines the background, the numbers affected, the overall humanitarian situation and food aid, as well as discussing USAID/OFDA's relief efforts and assistance.
