AFRICA: World at crossroads on AIDS

JOHANNESBURG, 9 June 2006 (PlusNews) - A US researcher at Yale University's Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS has come to the conclusion that the world is at a crucial juncture in its fight against HIV/AIDS.

In his study, 'The HIV-AIDS Pandemic at 25 - The Global Response', Michael Merson chronicled the global spread of the disease and how governments and international health organisations were tackling it.

Noting that the world was now "at a crossroads" in its anti-AIDS efforts, Merson called for further research on prevention methods, improved international coordination and increased global funding to "strengthen fragile healthcare systems".
