AFRICA: Sexual behaviour campaigns reaping rewards
JOHANNESBURG, 8 May 2006 (PlusNews) - More young Africans are delaying their sexual debut, taking fewer sex partners and using more condoms, according to UNAIDS executive director Peter Piot.
Piot told the African Union HIV/AIDS summit in Abuja, Nigeria, this was an indication that youth anti-AIDS campaigns were finally hitting home.
"We are seeing some serious behaviour change," he noted.
Piot attributed the progress to far higher foreign donations - mostly from the US and the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria - improved grassroots projects and a new openness about the pandemic.
