NIGERIA: Lax AIDS awareness among Bayelsa rural dwellers
JOHANNESBURG, 24 February 2006 (PlusNews) - Government officials in Nigeria's oil producing Bayelsa state, have expressed concern over the poor level of HIV/AIDS awareness among the area's rural folk.
Opusiri Otobo, chairman for health in the state house of assembly, said most awareness campaigns were limited to state capitals.
"Ignorance among our people in the rural communities in Bayelsa is very high due to lack of AIDS sensitisation programmes at grassroots level," the Vanguard newspaper quoted Otobo as saying.
Otobo hoped an upcoming collaboration between his department and other role players would help carry awareness messages to those communities sidelined by existing campaigns.
