AFRICA: AU vows greater anti-AIDS coverage by 2010

JOHANNESBURG, 9 February 2006 (PlusNews) - The African Union (AU) Commission and international partners have agreed to strengthen HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment efforts on the continent over the next five years.

AU Director of Social Affairs Kamel Esseghairi said a roadmap prepared with the help of UNAIDS would help to bring about universal access to all HIV-positive people.

"It aims to identify solutions to key obstacles blocking comprehensive and integrated scale-up of prevention, treatment, care and support services," he recently told reporters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The roadmap is the outcome of almost two years of interaction with UNAIDS and leading international anti-AIDS organisations.
