RWANDA: First ever condom campaign launched

JOHANNESBURG, 30 January 2006 (PlusNews) - Rwanda has launched its first campaign promoting constant and correct condom use in an effort to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Agnes Binagwaho, head of the National Commission for the Fight Against AIDS, was quoted as saying by Agence France-Presse, "Each year condom use increases, but Rwandans still don't use them enough."

The campaign targeting young people, commercial sex workers and prisoners, also aims to reduce cultural and religious resistance to condoms.

At least three percent of Rwandan adults are currently living with AIDS, while prevalence rates in some urban areas are estimated as high as seven percent.
