CAMEROON: New vaccine to target vertical HIV transmission

A new HIV/AIDS research centre in Cameroon is to create a vaccine to prevent the transmission of HIV through breast-feeding.

According to Scidev.net, a leading online science news website, the trials will continue the research into a vaccine being developed by Families First Africa, an alliance led by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Researchers from the region are being trained at the centre in preparation for upcoming safety trials.

The World Health Organisation has estimated that breast-feeding might account for nearly half of all HIV infections in infants.
