NAMIBIA: Government urged to decriminalise sex work

An appeal by a public interest law group has Namibia considering the decriminalisation of sex work.

Dianne Hubbard, co-ordinator of the Gender Research and Advocacy Project, run by the Legal Assistance Centre (LAC), said it would be the "only sensible and compassionate choice, while sex workers seek better alternatives".

Hubbard told members of the National Council's Standing Committee on Gender and Youth that "decriminalising sex work would reduce HIV transmission in the areas sex workers operate, since it would set the stage for more effective HIV-AIDS campaigns targeting sex workers and clients".

Committee member, Willem Apollus, welcomed the recommendation saying "I agree to a certain extent that we try out decriminalising sex work apart from legalising it," the Namibian reported.
