RWANDA: End of year sees more AIDS drugs

The number of people on anti-AIDS treatment in Rwanda could increase 20-fold by the end of the year.

Rwanda plans use international aid to the tune of US $85 million from the World Bank and the Global AIDS Fund to raise the current number of people on treatment from 4,350 to at least 90,000.

The new programme also aims to further increase that number to 100,000 by 2007.

"For us to attain this, we plan to start purchasing generic drugs, because they are a lot cheaper than the branded ones," the Associated Press quoted Louis Munyakazi, head of the Treatment Research for AIDS Centre, as saying.
