NAMIBIA: AIDS devastates education sector - Minister

Namibia's Minister of Basic Education, John Mutorwa, has expressed concern over the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS on the education sector.

Mutorwa told a local newspaper, The Namibian, that the pandemic had the "potential to nullify all the good work that is being planned and done within the sector".

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has said the country could see a substantial rise in the number of orphans over the next five to six years as a result of the pandemic.

Research has indicated that Namibia is currently grappling with the problem of caring for some 120,000 orphans and other vulnerable children.
