RWANDA: UK initiative funds AIDS battle

An initiative by the UK Department For International Development (DFID), has pledged more than US $84 million to assist Rwanda in tackling HIV/AIDS, the Rwanda News Agency reported.

DFID's Support of International Partnership against AIDS in Africa (SIPAA) initiative, aims to prevent the spread of HIV and implement new measures of care for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Rwanda's National AIDS Commission (CNLS) welcomed the pledge and said it had been working with SIPAA for more than a year.

Diane Muhongerwa, the CNLS assistant director, said: "SIPAA helped us in raising the amount of money that we needed to fight against AIDS and its spread."
