TANZANIA: EU donates 7 million euro for food to refugees

DAR ES SALAAM, 11 Aug 2005 (IRIN) - The European Union (EU) has donated seven million euro to the UN World Food Programme (WFP) for its operations in refugee camps in Tanzania, the UN agency said on Wednesday.

"The funds come at a critical time as funding shortages have forced us to reduce food rations to refugees for almost a year," Patrick Buckley, the WFP country director, said in a statement.

"The latest contribution will go a long way towards resolving this situation," he said.

The funding, made available on Friday, will provide 400,000 refugees with maize, beans, vegetable oil and gains for almost three months, WFP said.

The EU has provided more than 34 million euro to WFP in Tanzania since January 2003, more than one-third of all WFP’s resources in the country.
