AFRICA: Clinton Global Initiative raises US $1.25 billion in pledges
JOHANNESBURG, 19 Sep 2005 (PLUSNEWS) - International donors pledged US $1.25 billion to worldwide HIV/AIDS and development programmes at a three-day meeting launched by ex-US president Bill Clinton.
According to the Kaisernetwork news service, by the end of the New York meeting on Saturday, representatives of governments, businesses and organisations had made almost 200 formal pledges.
The Clinton Global Initiative was launched to address poverty, religious conflict and corruption to coincide with the United Nations 2005 World Summit.
Participants were asked for written commitments to taking action on one of the initiative's focus areas, and Clinton plans to report on their progress during the next year. Another meeting has been scheduled for 2006.
