RWANDA: Specific care and treatment urged for orphans

JOHANNESBURG, 4 Jul 2005 (PLUSNEWS) - The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) says HIV/AIDS has contributed to a large proportion of Rwanda's orphans.

Keith Bintou, the UNICEF Resident Representative, urged a recent workshop in the capital, Kigali, to roll out care and treatment targeting HIV-positive children.

"Children are the most innocent victims of all. They deserve all of our concerted attention. The problems they face are complex, multifaceted and must be tackled in a holistic manner," said Bintou.

Only 719 of the country's estimated 20,000 HIV-positive children currently have access to anti-AIDS drugs.
